Kibble, Wet or Freeze-Dried: What the Format Actually Changes for Your Dog
Short answer: kibble, wet and freeze-dried foods can all be complete and balanced. What the format mainly changes is water content, calories per gram, how the food stores once opened, and cost per day. Choose the formulation first, then the format that suits your dog, your budget and your home.
Owners often treat format as a quality ranking, as if wet food were automatically better than dry, or freeze-dried were a step above both. In reality, a well-formulated dry food and a poorly formulated wet food are not equal just because one comes in a can. Here is what actually changes between formats.
Water content changes everything on the label
The biggest difference is moisture. Dry kibble is usually around 10% moisture or less. V-Planet, for example, lists a maximum of 10%. Wet food is often 75% to 80% water. Freeze-dried food has most of the water removed and is often rehydrated before serving.
This is why you cannot compare a guaranteed analysis between formats directly. A wet food showing 8% protein and a kibble showing 24% protein may be closer than they look once the water is taken out. To compare fairly, convert to a dry matter basis: divide the nutrient percentage by the dry matter percentage (100 minus moisture). Our guide to reading dog food labels explains this step by step.
Calories per gram
Because kibble carries so little water, it is calorie-dense. V-Planet is calculated at 330 kcal per 100 g. A wet food of similar nutrition might provide a fraction of that per 100 g simply because so much of the weight is water. This is why feeding charts for wet food list much larger portions, and why mixing formats without adjusting amounts can lead to weight gain.
Storage once opened
- Kibble: keeps for weeks once opened if the bag is sealed and stored somewhere cool and dry. In the UAE, that means indoors, away from sunny windows, never in a car or on a balcony.
- Wet food: must be refrigerated after opening and used within a short time, usually a couple of days. Food left in the bowl in a warm room should be removed promptly.
- Freeze-dried: stores well while sealed, but once rehydrated it behaves like fresh food and should not be left out.

Cost per day
Dry food is usually the most economical per day of feeding, because you are not paying to ship water. Wet and freeze-dried formats generally cost more per calorie. That does not make them wrong, but it is worth working out the daily cost for your dog's weight rather than comparing pack prices.
Convenience and routine
Kibble is easy to measure, easy to take on trips and works with puzzle feeders and slow-feed bowls. Wet food is often more appealing to picky eaters and adds water to the diet, which some dogs benefit from. Freeze-dried food is light to carry but needs preparation time.
Dental health: a common myth
You may hear that kibble cleans teeth. Ordinary kibble provides only limited mechanical cleaning, and it is not a substitute for brushing or veterinary dental care. Choose a format for nutrition and practicality, and look after teeth separately.
Can you mix formats?
Yes, as long as both foods are complete and balanced and you reduce each portion so the total calories stay right. If you add wet food on top of a full kibble portion, you are overfeeding. Mixing also makes it harder to tell which food is causing a problem if your dog has a sensitive stomach, so keep things simple if digestion is an issue.
Where plant-based food fits
Plant-based dog foods are most widely available as dry kibble. V-Planet is a dry kibble made in Canada, sold in a regular size for medium and large breeds and a smaller Mini Bites shape for mini and small breeds. It is the same recipe in both sizes, so you choose the kibble size for your dog's mouth, not a different formula.
If your dog prefers a softer texture, you can add a little warm water to kibble just before serving. Serve it straight away and throw away leftovers.
How to decide
- Start with a food that is complete and balanced for your dog's life stage.
- Consider your dog: chewing ability, appetite, weight and any digestive issues.
- Consider your home: storage space, fridge room, heat and how often you can shop.
- Work out the cost per day, not per pack.
- If your dog has a health condition, ask your vet which format they suggest.
Frequently asked questions
Is wet dog food healthier than kibble?
Not automatically. Both can be complete and balanced. Wet food adds water and can suit picky eaters, while kibble is more calorie-dense, easier to store and usually cheaper per day.
Why does wet food show lower protein than dry food?
Because most of its weight is water. Compare foods on a dry matter basis by dividing the nutrient percentage by 100 minus the moisture percentage.
Does kibble clean my dog's teeth?
Only to a limited degree. It is not a replacement for tooth brushing or dental check-ups with your vet.
Can I soften kibble with water?
Yes. Add a little warm water just before serving and offer it straight away. Do not leave moistened kibble sitting out, especially in a warm home.
Is V-Planet available as wet food?
V-Planet is sold as dry kibble, in a regular size for medium and large breeds and Mini Bites for smaller dogs. Both use the same recipe.
